ABC Announces 2021 Summer Schedule With Lots of Surprises
We were waiting on the status of many of ABC's slew of game shows, and today, ABC released their summer schedule, which included a few changes and gave us the status of most of the shows.
ABC's signature Fun & Games Block on Sundays gets a bit of a new look this year. The Sunday games kick off on June 6th. The night will start off with a brand new season of Celebrity Family Feud, The Chase will follow at 9/8c and the night will finish with new episodes of To Tell The Truth.
According to Deadline, The Chase will get a supersized second season order and ABC seemed liked they were very happy with the winter run and wanted to get it back on air as soon as possible.
“The Chase is one of those ones we wanted to get back on as soon as possible because we really want the momentum of that format to keep going,” said Mills. “Hopefully you’ll see million dollar final chases in this second cycle. But we really are high on that format. We’re excited with how it did this winter and we’re glad we can bring it back so quickly.”
Based on that quote from Rob Mills, the EVP, Unscripted and Alternative Entertainment at Disney, it doesn't sound like we will see any big changes to the cash structure.
Truth just finished off a ten episode run a few weeks ago and it sounds like these new episodes are remaining episodes from that sixth season. It's unknown how many are left, but it also wouldn't be a surprise if ABC commissioned a seventh season and began taping more episodes. The show can tape pretty quickly.
Another round of games will then air on Wednesdays beginning June 9th. The night will start off with a fresh season of Press Your Luck, followed by the fifth season of The $100,000 Pyramid and finishing with new episodes of Card Sharks. Card Sharks is in a similar boat to Truth. There is at least three episodes remaining in the current season, which finished in the end of January. As of right now, ABC has not commissioned a third season of the show. PYL also has four episodes remaining from Season 2, which I assume will get mixed into the current season.
Then, on Thursdays beginning June 17th, the third season of Holey Moley will premiere, titled Holey Moley 3D in 2D, followed by a brand new second season of The Hustler.
To round it out, ABC will debut its revival of Celebrity Dating Game on Monday, June 14th, following The Bachelorette. The series will have an eight episode run before giving way to Ultimate Surfer in mid August.
This leaves a few shows still up in the air: Millionaire, Don't, Supermarket Sweep and Match Game. A report from TVLine indicates Don't has been cancelled after one season. Match Game still has episodes remaining as well. As for Millionaire and Sweep, well Supermarket Sweep was the #2 rated game show for ABC, so I assume it might be back for another fall run. Millionaire is a toss up but I'd still be more shocked if they don't bring it back.
